It All Starts with the Cover...
The old adage "you can't judge a book by its cover" is inaccurate. While many of us try to hold ourselves to that lofty ideal, we often fall short. What draws our attention to magazines? Big headlines and bold images. The cover of a magazine is just as important as its content. It is the first thing to catch a reader's attention, and it is the key to drawing a reader in. The covers below are some of the covers that I have had an active role in developing.
GO!As part of an undergraduate project to develop and design a magazine, GO !'s target audience were males 18-25 years old. To draw in that age group, the magazine was designed to use some of the same fonts as GQ magazine--a subtle hint that this was where to go to be "cool." The main focus of this issue was the underground hip hop and breakdance movement that was growing at BYU-Idaho as seen in the emergence of a weekly dance competition known as "Dance Battle Wednesday." To capture this, we chose a strong image of a breakdancer mid freeze with the headline "More Than Dancing." The appeal to males is obvious: "Wow that looks cool. I better check it out."
